Health emergency as a moment of discovery: how young people develop winning strategies to overcome the lockdown

The study shows that young people, although unable to meet their peers and thus being separated from their main reference groups, have always been "connected". In addition, lockdown has brought them to relevant “discovers”. Information, which was not a priority before, has become crucial during the pandemic. Family and main affections have played a fundamental role, and especially books have created an important connection across generations.

Why was the research conducted?

The research was conducted upon the request of LATTANZIO KIBS' Studies & Research for scientific purposes as a part of periodic surveys that they conduct on the two targets “millennials” and “centennials”.

How was the research conducted?

LATTANZIO Monitoring & Evaluation in collaboration with Gimmelike carried out a survey on a national sample of 805 young people, aged 15-36 years, statistically representative of the reference universe by gender, age and geographical area of residence. CAMI (Computer Assisted Mobile interviews) mode has been used.

What are the key findings of the research?

The research shows that young people are approaching lockdown quietly, but efficiently:
  • they are aware of the relevance of the main measures imposed by the government and 87% of them agrees with them, despite the sacrifices they imply. The percentage is higher in the north-east regions (96%).
  • During quarantine time, getting informed has become crucial. 86% of the sample does it daily; interestingly, the TV is the first channel of information together with talk-shows (57%) and news (53%), while social news lag slightly behind (48%).
  • The lessons learned with lockdown are multiple: the discovery of the role of family – despite 39% of young people feel that cohabitation is difficult, they consider family as a “security ring” – the importance of “being here now” (49%) and little micro practices which fill their days with meaning (47%) are the most chosen items, and thus sign a break with the pre-pandemic period.
